What should I consider when choosing a home health care provider?

Home care services are an excellent option for individuals who need medical attention or even nonmedical assistance with daily activities, but would rather receive this care in their home. When it comes to choosing a home care company there are many facets to consider. First and foremost, you should ensure that the company employs highly trained and professional caregivers. You want to make sure that the caregivers are compassionate and trustworthy and above all compatible for your needs. Its important to initially identify your home care needs and have an idea of the level of care you may require. Know whether you are looking for home health care or nonmedical home care.  Then some of the questions you may want answered are:

  • Is the home care agency fully accredited for safety and quality care?

  • Is the home care agency licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Is there a time minimum?

  • What will the cost be?

  • What are the caregiver hiring and training procedures ?

  • What will the  care management be like  and how are changes in health and level of care handled?

  • After-hours and emergency calls procedure

  • Review of home care policies and procedures

Are your practitioners certified or licensed?

Do you provide free consultations before we decide on a home care professional?

An  intake interview (usually by phone)  with the patient or family/significant other  will be performed initially by a qualified staff member. This initial interview is a good opportunity to ask the home care agency any questions you may feel are pertinent, though questions and open communication are encouraged at all times.  A registered nurse will then perform an in-person nursing assessment of the patient at no cost to establish a baseline of the patients physical and functional status and to identify the level of services needed to safely meet the patients needs. Based on this in person assessment, a Plan of Care will be developed prior to the start of service. In the event a patient is coming from a healthcare facility, this Plan of Care will be established within 24-48 hours after start of service.
